How to use Oat Milk more Sustainably

Oat drinks are sustainable, vegan alternatives to dairy milk. They can be used in drinks, cooking, shakes, smoothies and baking. Whilst most come readymade in cartons, powdered oat “milk” is now available as a low-packaging version that is healthier and cheaper.

We’ve been using pre-mixed oat drinks like Oatly for several years. When we came across Overherd, we thought it was worth a try. We bought a starter pack and gave it a go.

About Overherd

Overheard oat milk powder is made from organic oats and can be diluted to make oat milk or used as a creamer. It’s available to buy online and in selected stockists in the UK and Ireland.

Here’s our unbiased review of Overherd Oat Milk Powder.

How is Overherd oat milk used?

You make up the milk by measuring the powder into a bottle and shaking it. The starter kit includes a glass bottle and bamboo scoop.

You can add the powder straight to drinks and use it in cooking.

How we tested it

We tried Overherd in cereal, pasta sauces, in protein shakes, smoothies and straight into drinks.

How effective was it?

Overall, it worked really well.

The milk itself is good on its own or with cereal.

It worked well in pasta sauces.

We think it would work well in custard, but haven’t tested it.

We didn’t test it in baking either.

Did it taste good?

Yes, it has a good subtle taste, not overpowering. You can adjust the flavour to your taste by making it thicker or more watery depending on your preference.

How does it compare with other brands?

We haven’t tried any other powdered oat milks.

It’s not as creamy as Oatly or as watery as the cheaper b

Was it easy to use?

It’s very quick and easy to prep a bottle of milk. You can use it straight away. It just needs a quick shake.

It’s easy to stir the powder straight into hot drinks too.

It’s great for traveling as it’s light and the powder keeps well.

What did you like most about it?

I love that it’s so easy to use,one pouch lasts a long time and it’s got a long expiry date.

I really love that I don’t have to carry lots of heavy milk cartons from the shop!

It’s also brilliant that it’s vegan, gluten-free and sugar free. Most brands aren’t GF.
It’s also cheaper than buying most ready-made oat drinks.

What did you like least about it?

It’s sometimes a bit lumpy if you don’t shake it enough. It may need to be shaken again before use.

It can require a lot of stirring to dissolve all of the powder into hot drinks.

Any advice for others?

  • Make sure to shake/stir it well.

  • Think ahead when making up the milk, to avoid wasting it, for example, if you’re going away.

  • Buy it in bigger quantities to save on postage.

  • If you’re on a subscription, it’s easy to delay the next order if you need to.
