Sustainable Advent Calendar
Instead of going for plasticky chocolate advent calendars or expensive branded ones, why not create your own sustainable one?
Here are a couple of ideas for a calendar that can be used year after year:
• Try making a fabric advent calendar with pockets for each day like this one https://www.applegreencottage.com/diy-advent-calendar/
• Use fun homemade paper envelopes or fabric bags with the date written on them. String them on a piece of ribbon with coloured wooden pegs.
• Pick up secondhand reusable calendar in a charity shop
Fill your lovely calendar with things like:
• Kind messages, favour vouchers, affirmations
• Small gifts like pin badges, stickers, fun pens
• Edibles like mini homemade hot chocolate kits with marshmallows, crystallised ginger or fancy tea bags.
Or a mixture of all of them!

Ditch the Car
Ditch the Car…once a day. According to research by green power company 100Green, ditching the car once a day could reduce our CO2 emissions by a massive 500kg per year. They say:
“How we travel is a huge contributor to our personal carbon emissions…In fact, our previous research found that if just a quarter of parents walked their children to school instead of driving, they would save 85,410 tonnes of CO2 every year, the equivalent of flying from London to Australia over 12,000 times!”
Amazing!

Choose Green Energy
Switching to a green supplier (not just a green tariff) guarantees you green energy at a time when suppliers of mixed energy (green and regular) are under scrutiny for greenwashing.
100Green is currently the only supplier offering both green gas and green electricity. While not 100% green, Ecotricity, Good Energy and Octopus energy are all well respected suppliers of green energy and worth considering.
Try Uswitch or Money Expert for locating good deals in your area.

Use Your Dishwasher
Yes, you read that right. It is more energy-efficient to use your dishwasher than to handwash – provided you always wait until it’s full to run it.
To maximise your energy saving, run it full, at night on a cool wash.
And don’t forget to use an environmentally friendly dishwasher tablet. A recent BBC Good Food investigation found that Ecover POWER 3-in-1 tablets were best overall and easily available from supermarkets (35p per wash).
Purum 3-in-1 tablets scored highly and were cheaper per wash (26p excluding shipping) available from Regn or Purum websites.

Turn Down the Temperature
Reducing the temperature of your shower can have a real impact on your carbon footprint. Taking a cold shower has lots of health benefits too, but if you aren’t quite ready for that, try decreasing the heat a little over the course of a week. Or give yourself a cool blast at the end.

Bring your Own Bags
We all know that single-use plastic bags are a no-no but it’s easy to forget and end up buying more when shopping. Here are a couple of tips we’ve found helpful:
• Get some bags you really like. Enjoying using them will help you remember.
• Always keep a compact shopping bag in your coat pocket or handbag
• Stash a couple of bags in the car.
• Consider a bag holder right by the front door to help you remember to pick some up on your way out!

Buddy up to Buy in Bulk
Buying in bulk is a great way to shop more sustainably. It’s simple if you need long-lasting canned or dried food, but what about fresh produce?
Buddying up with a like-minded friend, colleague or neighbour means you can buy in bulk without the waste: share the produce (and the cost) between one or more of you.
That leads to
1. Reduced Packaging Waste especially if buying sacks of food
2. Lower Carbon Footprint/ fewer trips to the shops
3. Cost Efficiency: bulk quantities usually means a lower price per item.

Choose Bamboo
Bamboo can be an excellent sustainable choice for toothbrushes, kitchen items and furniture. It can be harvested without killing the plant, it doesn’t require pesticides or insecticides to grow, and it’s biodegradable.
Not all bamboo is grown sustainably, so do check that the product certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or other similar organisations.

Shampoo & Conditioner Bars
Avoid plastic packaging with hair products in bar form.
Solid shampoo and conditioners have come a long way since they were first introduced. Companies like Gruum offer cleansing and conditioning bars for a wide range of hair types and problems. So, if your hair needs volume, defrizzing or nourishment, there are bars for you.
Based on trials by 650 people, Good Housekeeping recommends “Honey I washed my Hair” by Lush for £10 and Odacité 552M Soap Free Shampoo Bar at £27 as their top picks.
So, if you haven’t tried solid hair products for a while, now is a great time to give them a try!

Go For Glass or Stainless Steel
We all know that single-use bags and containers are a bad for kitchen storage but have you thought about avoiding plastic altogether?
Glass and stainless-steel containers and bottles have some great benefits. As well as being long-lasting, these materials don’t pick up taints from food, crack, warp or stain.
Although they may cost more than plastic equivalents, they’re an excellent investment that can last a lifetime!

Work Together
A really positive way to up your sustainability game is to take part in creative community or group projects. It might be gathering 2L plastic bottles to help make a greenhouse for a school or ironing together clean crisp packets to create a survival blanket or contributing to a food pantry. There are lots of opportunities to work together with others to make a difference.
